Is Midwifery Covered by Insurance? What to Know

Written by WomanCare PC | Jul 24, 2026, 1:00:00 PM

Many families assume midwifery care comes entirely out of pocket, but coverage is far more common than most people realize. The details depend on your plan type, your state, and the credentials of the midwife providing your care.

At WomanCare, our midwifery team works alongside our OB/GYN doctors to give you options, and understanding your coverage is the first step toward choosing the path that's right for you.

What Does Midwifery Care Include?

Midwifery care spans prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, postpartum follow-up, and often includes gynecological services, like annual exams and family planning counseling.

Midwives are trained to support low-risk pregnancies with a personalized, hands-on approach, working in close partnership with physicians when a higher level of care is needed.

Midwives practice in a range of settings, including hospitals, birth centers, and clinical offices. At WomanCare, our midwifery team practices within our clinical model, so you always have access to physician-level care if your needs change.

(Please note: WomanCare's midwifery program does not include newborn care or in-home visits, though telehealth options are available.)

Does Health Insurance Cover a Midwife?

The short answer: often, yes, especially when your care is provided by a Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM).

When Coverage Typically Applies

Most major insurance plans recognize CNMs as licensed clinicians and cover their services much the way they would an OB's, including prenatal visits, delivery, and postpartum care.

If your midwife is part of an in-network practice like WomanCare, your out-of-pocket costs generally align with your existing plan benefits.

When Insurance May Not Cover It

Coverage gaps can occur with out-of-network midwives, home birth services, or certain non-CNM credentials (such as Certified Professional Midwives), depending on your plan and state. Always confirm network status and credential requirements before your first visit.

How to Check Your Midwifery Insurance Coverage

A little homework up front can save you surprises later. Here are some questions to ask your insurance provider beforehand:

  • Is midwifery care covered under my plan, and is WomanCare in-network?
  • Are prenatal visits, delivery, and postpartum care all included?
  • What are my copay, deductible, and out-of-pocket responsibilities?
  • Does my plan cover CNMs the same way it covers OB physicians?

Understanding Your Explanation of Benefits (EOB)

After each visit, your insurer sends an EOB outlining what your plan paid and what you may owe. It's not a bill, but it's worth reviewing closely, since it's often the first place billing errors or coverage misunderstandings surface.

If You're Uninsured, Underinsured, or Have Private Insurance

Lack of insurance, not enough insurance, or private insurance shouldn't stand between you and quality midwifery or OB/GYN care. WomanCare works with patients to understand what is covered and what is not, and find a path forward that fits their circumstances.

Payment Plans and Sliding Scale Options

Ask our team about our flexible OB/GYN payment options and self-pay rates. We accept cash, checks, and most credit cards.

Marketplace and Enrollment Options

If you're between plans, the ACA Marketplace offers enrollment windows, including special enrollment for pregnancy in many states, that can open the door to coverage for midwifery and maternity care.
